Phaius Species ´Liberty Dark Clone 4N´ is a fake

On ebay one can find a promising offer: Phaius Species ‘Liberty Dark Clone 4N’. To my knowledge the naming is a fake, the offered plants are neithter a species nor are they 4N.

I keep this plant for quite some time and its pollen were tested for its ploydie by flow cytometry measurements. The obtained c-value of 10.9 pg closely resembles the c-value of Phaius wallichii pollen (10.7 pg). Therefore one can conclude that the Liberty Dark Clone 4N ist not tetraploid. I am pretty sure it is just a hybrid of Phaius wallichii and Phaius tankervilleae.

  2. Hi. I saw that ad on ebay. I was thinking about buying one.
    I’m in England, but I’m Romanian really.
    I just want a P. tankervilleae as I saw some photos on the Internet and I love everything about it.
    Not a big or hid fan. Just have some Hardy orchids in pots outside, a couple paphiopedilum from madeira. Don’t care about hybrids, etc.
    Any idea where I can get a tiny plant???

    1. Hi, thanks for your comment. It is not easy to obtain a Phaius tankervilleae as Phaius is a genus that is not often offered. I know one german orchid nursery that could have a Phaius tankervilleae available. Just contact me via email. Best regards, Eike
